Fenway Park's a perk

Sure, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are looking forward to playing in
Boston this weekend.

But according to E Street guitarist Nils Lofgren, it's pretty much
another day at the office - even if the office is a jam-packed Fenway Park.

``It should be exciting to play Fenway,'' Lofgren said from
Scottsdale, Ariz., where he was enjoying a few days off from the yearlong
Springsteen tour with his wife, Amy, and stepson Dylan. ``That's a nice perk,
to have a beautiful historic setting.

``But my focus is so deep on the band and what's going on onstage. It
needs to be, because that's my job. You can't let the show come and go
depending on a setting or a lukewarm audience. Sure, the better the setting,
the better the audience, the more energy gets thrown at you. We can use it. But
our job is to do something special and memorable regardless of the conditions.

``But, yeah, heading into Fenway and knowing the history, and coming
to Boston, where I've been playing for 35 years, well, it's always been a great
rock town. So I'm looking forward to playing for the crowd.''

Last month Springsteen started bringing his yearlong ``The Rising''
tour to baseball venues including Los Angeles' Dodger Stadium, San Franciso's
Pacific Bell Park and Chicago's U.S. Cellular Field. Is performing in a
baseball park any different than playing the football stadiums rock bands more
usually frequent?

``In general, the baseball stadiums have a bit more charm,'' Lofgren
said. ``A lot of them have a bit more history. I am a big sports fan, though
it's more basketball and football now for me than baseball. I'm not even sure
how the Red Sox are doing this year. But maybe we'll bring 'em some good
luck.''

But isn't the Boss a Yankees fan?

``I would think so,'' Lofgren said. ``I wouldn't want to speak for
anyone else, but that's a safe bet.''

Despite Springsteen's baseball loyalty to the enemy, Bostonians feel
a special bond with Springsteen that has only deepened with his decision to
play Fenway. Are we deluding ourselves - or is the feeling mutual?

``You go into every town wanting to do your best show,'' Lofgren
replied. ``But personally, it's a function of time spent. We have a lot of
history with Boston. It's a place with great, enthusiastic crowds, which
selfishly you notice. It's an exciting thing you look forward to. I've played
there so many times, not just with Bruce but with my own band, too.''

Lofgren is best-known as a sideman, thanks to his work with Neil
Young (that's him singing and playing piano on ``After the Gold Rush'') and,
for the past 19 years, with Springsteen. But he's never stopped recording solo
albums. His new ``Live'' is a typically diverse, guitar-filled double CD
Lofgren released on his own due to a surprising lack of major label interest.

``I'm 52. I have no chance of fitting in to the whole belly-pop, soft-
porn thing the music industry is into now,'' Lofgren said. ``I'm just doing my
own thing off the grid and that's exciting.

``So next month I'll go back to being a bandleader. I'm sure I'll be
coming up through Boston early next year. But right now I'm out here with Bruce
and I'm deeply into it.

``It's funny. I never feel like a sideman when I play with Bruce. I
feel like it's my band and I've found a great singer who's become a fabulous
performer and he brings a couple of hundred amazing songs to the table. Bruce
is so consistent every night that I wake up in the morning excited to go to
work. It's like every night is the Super Bowl and you're guaranteed a win. I've
got to say that, arguably, we're as good as any band in history.''

ABENDBLATT: Zuletzt haben wir uns in Hamburg gesehen, als Sie mit Ihrem "Silver Lining"-Album auf Tour waren und in der Großen Freiheit gespielt haben . . .

NILS LOFGREN: Oha, das ist ja schon einige Zeit her! In den 90er-Jahren war ich häufig in Deutschland. Demnächst kommt auch ein Live-Doppelalbum, ,Nils Lofgren Band Live'. Wenn diese Tournee mit Bruce zu Ende ist, komme ich mit meiner Band wieder nach Deutschland.

ABENDBLATT: Auf der Bühne steht nicht nur der ,Boss' selbst, sondern auch seine Frau Patti Scialfa. Wer ist denn da der Boss?

LOFGREN: Patti kam in die Band, als auch ich dazustieß - 1984. Wir sind nun schon 18 Jahre in dieser Band! Aber auf der Bühne ist Bruce der Bandleader, und wir bekommen unsere "Anweisungen" von ihm. Er entscheidet, was wir spielen und ändert jeden Abend den Set, um die Spannung zu erhalten.

ABENDBLATT: Wie lange dauern die Shows? Zwei Stunden?

LOFGREN: Wir sind jetzt bei drei Stunden angekommen - mit einer Pause dazwischen.

ABENDBLATT: Sie haben schon mit vielen Künstlern auf der Bühne gestanden, darunter Neil Young und Branford Marsalis. Was ist das Besondere an Springsteen?

LOFGREN: Bruce ist einer der großen Songwriter der Geschichte, und ich hatte das Glück, auch noch mit einem anderen dieser Größenordnung zu spielen: Neil Young. Bruce entwickelt eine große Leidenschaft für Live-Auftritte; wenn man das mit den Songs verbindet, dann bekommt man einen ungeheuer energetischen Bandleader und Sänger. Er ist in großartiger Form. Wenn wir dann rausgehen, entlädt sich die ganze Energie. Und Bruce muss besonders viel leisten in seiner Doppelrolle als Bandchef und Sänger. Das ist das Einzigartige an ihm: Dass ein Mann mit diesem Talent gleichbleibend leidenschaftlich jeden Abend loslegt!

ABENDBLATT: Ihr seid für die Opfer des 11. September aufgetreten; viele Songs haben politische Inhalte. Eine Band auf Mission?

LOFGREN: Die Mission ist, jede Nacht zu einer großen musikalischen Erfahrung im Leben des Publikums zu machen. Die Menschen kommen wegen Bruces Songs; unser Job ist es, für jeden Einzelnen diesen Abend zum unvergesslichen Ereignis zu machen.

ABENDBLATT: Haben Sie als Amerikaner ein Problem mit den Deutschen, weil sie Bush im Irak-Krieg nicht unterstützt haben?

LOFGREN: Mein Focus ist die Musik, ich nehme die Politik nicht mit auf die Bühne.

ABENDBLATT: Sind Sie gern Teil einer Band - oder können Sie es gar nicht mehr erwarten, sich um Solo-Projekte zu kümmern?

LOFGREN: Ich veröffentliche meine Platten auf meiner Website www.nilslofgren.com, denn zurzeit traut sich keiner, mit mir an meinen Projekten zu arbeiten. Wenn ich mit Bruce unterwegs bin, leiste ich es mir, mich nur auf seine Musik zu konzentrieren. Ich bin jetzt schon 35 Jahre lang ein Bandleader, manchmal ist es ganz schön, nicht der Boss zu sein. Wenn ich mit Bruce unterwegs bin, kümmere ich mich, statt den Stress eines Bandleaders am Hals zu haben, um meine eigene musikalische Entwicklung: Ich übe auf neuen Instrumenten, gerade lerne ich Pedal Steel Guitar und die Dobro. Wenn ich als Bandleader unterwegs bin, habe ich für alles Mögliche die Verantwortung. Aber wenn diese Tour zu Ende ist, dann habe ich eine Menge neuer Ideen, gehe zurück zu meiner Band und spiele einige Acoustic-Shows. Aber jetzt, mit Bruce und der E-Street-Band, genieße ich viele kreative Freiheiten, die ich als Bandleader nicht habe.

Ich habe eine CD von Nils Lofgren, die da heisst "Shine Silently" und bei "Spectrum Music" erschienen ist. Nun wollte ich mal fragen, ob das evtl. ein Bootleg ist, weil ich's bisher noch nicht in einer Discography gefunden habe (oder ich war mal wieder blind :rolleyes:). Oder bin ich mal wieder uninformiert ?
