LAKE PLACID — Born to run? Sure. Born to kayak? Well ...…

During a routine boat patrol of Lake Placid lake over the Fourth of July weekend, Department of Environmental Conservation forest rangers spotted an overturned kayak some distance from shore.

They pulled up to the boat, and, DEC Region 5 spokesman David Winchell said Wednesday, “That’s when they saw young Mr. Springsteen swimming in the water.”

That would be Evan Springsteen, 15, son of, yes, legendary musician Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa.

The couple’s daughter, Jessica, competes in the annual horse show here, and the family has made Lake Placid a regular summer vacation spot in recent years.

The rangers helped Evan, who was unhurt, into their boat, drove him to the lakeside camp the family had rented and delivered him to his grateful parents.

“Springsteen thanked them for rescuing his son,” Winchell said, adding that one of the rangers hadn’t immediately recognized the musician and had to be clued in by his partner.

Evan had apparently been kayaking with friends when his boat tipped over, Winchell said. He did not know how long the teen had been in the water before the rangers saw him. The other kayakers followed the rangers’ boat to the camp.

Though Springsteen is generally left alone by local media during his visits to Lake Placid, the July 2 rescue marks the second year in a row that the Fourth of July weekend has pushed his name into the papers.

Last year, thousands of people attended an outdoor concert in Lake Placid after rumors circulated that Springsteen would sit in with Exit 105, a New Jersey band headlining what was a day-long celebration.

Some people said they saw Springsteen drive by the concert a few times, but that was as close as they got to a performance: The rumors that Springsteen would play turned out to be empty.

Wer weiß, was da dran ist.
