JOSEPH SCIALFA, 81, of RUMSON, died Saturday, March 12, at home. He was a successful local businessman and real estate entrepreneur. Born in 1923 in Long Branch, he grew up with his three sisters and attended Long Branch High School. He served in the U.S. Navy and later in the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring as lieutenant commander. He married Patricia Morris of Washington, D.C. in 1950 and they had three children, Michael, Patti, and Sean. He later divorced and remarried to Barbara DeRosa of West Sand Lake, N.Y. They had two children, Joey and Jesse, and resided in southern California. He was an avid aviator and sailor, piloting his Stearman biplane, and sailing between Florida and Rhode Island. In his 70's, he became a Harley-Davidson enthusiast, riding with his family and friends on sunny afternoons. He later divorced and lived the remainder of his life in Rumson.
Surviving are his three sisters, Lucy Buono, Frances West and Minnie Calcaterra, five children, and three grandchildren.
A visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Thompson Memorial Home, 310 Broad St., Red Bank. Funeral services are private. Memorial Donations in his memory may be made to The Alzheimers Association Greater NJ Chapter, 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834.
