Audio Society sounds out big pics for award noms

(Variety) The Cinema Audio Society has opted for major studio films for its Outstanding Achievement in Sound Mixing trophy, tapping Warner's "The Last Samurai," New Line's "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," Fox's "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World," Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and Universal's "Seabiscuit."
The kudos will be presented Feb. 21 at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel.
The org also tapped five nominees for TV movies and miniseries: "A Painted House," "And Starring Pancho Villa as Himself," "Angels in America --- Part 2," "Hitler: The Rise of Evil" and "My House in Umbria."
Noms in TV series went to the "Succession" episode of "Alias"; "Grissom Versus the Volcano" of "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"; "Shear Stupidity" of "NYPD Blue"; "I'm Sorry, I'm Lost" of "Six Feet Under"; and "5 p.m.-6 p.m." of "24."
Nods in TV nonfiction, variety, music or specials: "American Experience: The Center of the World," "The Blues: The Road to Memphis," "Bruce Springsteen (news) and the E Street Band," "45th Annual Grammy Awards" and "The 26th Annual Kennedy Center Honors."
