Convention Hall

Offizielle Homepage: http://theasburyparkboardwalk.com/
Mehr Infos:
Rock and roll has been a mainstay at Convention Hall since the 1950s. On June 30, 1956, a concert by Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers at the Hall ended prematurely when a fistfight in the audience erupted into a full scale riot. Three people were stabbed and then-Mayor Roland J. Hines threatened a city-wide ban on rock and roll performances. The ban never came to pass. In the mid-1960s, promoter Moe Septee started booking rock acts at Convention Hall, including some bands who would go on to achieve legendary status. Between 1965 and 1975, Septee booked The Beach Boys, James Brown, The Byrds, Ray Charles, The Dave Clark Five, The Doors, The J. Geils Band, Herman’s Hermits, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, The Temptations, Pink Floyd, and The Who, among many others. Led Zeppelin played Convention Hall the evening of August 16, 1969, after their manager, Peter Grant, rejected an invitation to Woodstock. Joe Cocker opened for Led Zeppelin that night, before riding up to Bethel, New York for his opening slot on the festival's third and final (scheduled) day.
Concerts at Convention Hall continued even after Septee's retirement. In the 1980s and 1990s, acts such as Peter Gabriel, Elvis Costello, The Clash, No Doubt, and The Goo Goo Dolls played the hall. During the 2000s, acts have included Seether, Papa Roach, 50 Cent, and Dream Theater. By this time, Convention Hall had neither heating nor air conditioning.
Beginning in the late 1990s Convention Hall gained a strong association with Bruce Springsteen, He held rehearsals for upcoming tours there (with fans standing outside to get early ideas of what the shows would bring), some ticketed public rehearsal shows, and several December holiday shows in conjunction with The Max Weinberg 7. The large lighted sign on the top of Convention Hall now reads "Greetings from Asbury Park", in reference to Springsteen's 1973 debut album Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.

Asbury Park Boardwalk

An dieser Stelle wurde das Cover für die amerikanische Singleveröffentlichung von "Hungry Heart" geschossen.

Mehr Infos:
The boardwalk in Asbury Park is in the process of revitalization and has recently been connected to the neighboring town of Ocean Grove, New Jersey. Asbury Park boasts a one mile long Boardwalk which is located 60 miles south of New York City, and about 90 minutes north of Atlantic City. Asbury Park is the birth home of Bruce Springsteen, Danny Devito and Jack Nicholson. Like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, Asbury Park is in the middle of a major redevelopment project right now. The Queen of the northern Jersey Shore is about to return to its former place of glory! Once known as the "Crown Jewel" of the Jersey Shore, Asbury Park is really going to try to make a comeback, and should be near finished by 2009. Try to catch it while the old buildings still exist, like “Madame Marie’s” brightly painted fortune telling booth made famous by Bruce Springsteen. The old Casino Pier is closed. It once contained a skating rink, roller derby, and amusements. The Casino has been a backdrop for the “Soprano’s” TV show and in the movie “City by the Sea.” In the next few years, the city promises shops, arcades, and goodie stands. 2007 brings new excitement as the boardwalk undergoes refurbishing. Several entrepreneurs have already opened new shops on the boardwalk, taking advantage of rent concessions to move into the old pavilions lining the boardwalk. On the first Saturday of every month, Asbury Park's downtown art galleries, home design studios, restaurants, antique shops, and clothing boutiques remain open throughout the evening, serving Hors d’œuvres and offering entertainment, to showcase the city's residential and commercial resurgence.

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN REMEMBERS MADAM MARIE
Back in the day when I was a fixture on the Asbury Park boardwalk, I’d often stop and talk to Madam Marie as she sat on her folding chair outside the Temple of Knowledge.
I’d sit across from her on the metal guard rail bordering the beach, and watched as she led the day trippers into the small back room where she would unlock a few of the mysteries of their future. She always told me mine looked pretty good – she was right. The world has lost enough mystery as it is – we need our fortunetellers. We send our condolences out to her family who’ve carried on her tradition. Over here on E Street, we will miss her - Bruce Springsteen Interview

The Student Prince / Gon Shin / Xanadoo

One night we were playing in Asbury Park. I'd heard The Bruce Springsteen Band was nearby at a club called The Student Prince and on a break between sets I walked over there. On-stage, Bruce used to tell different versions of this story but I'm a Baptist, remember, so this is the truth. A rainy, windy night it was, and when I opened the door the whole thing flew off its hinges and blew away down the street. The band were on-stage, but staring at me framed in the doorway. And maybe that did make Bruce a little nervous because I just said, "I want to play with your band," and he said, "Sure, you do anything you want." The first song we did was an early version of "Spirit In The Night". Bruce and I looked at each other and didn't say anything, we just knew. We knew we were the missing links in each other's lives. He was what I'd been searching for. In one way he was just a scrawny little kid. But he was a visionary. He wanted to follow his dream. So from then on I was part of history - Clarence Clemons Interview

The Upstage Club / Green Mermaid Cafe

Heimat von "Still Mill" und der "Bruce Springsteen Band". Bruce Springsteen kannte die Inhaber Margarete und Tom Potter und durfte die Lagerräume für Jamsessions nutzen. Offizielle Homepage: http://theupstageclub.net/

Mehr Infos:
The Green Mermaid Café was opened in downtown Asbury Park, NJ on the corner of Cookman Ave. and Bond Ave. in the late 60’s as a result of several factors. Tom and Margaret Potter had a successful beauty shop business as well as numerous other projects and ventures around town when a small adversity struck their family. Tom developed an allergic reaction to hair dye and other various chemicals common to the hairdresser on his hands. This meant he had to find alternate means of income.
Meanwhile his wife Margaret had a band known as The Distractions. They used to meet at the potter’s apartment above the beauty shop to practice weekly. On a regular basis Tom and Margaret had many friends and local musicians over to their home for BBQ and jam sessions that lasted way into the early mornings. The huge crowds that gathered at their home eventually got to be to big for the apartment to handle and then Tom realized what he could do. He soon spoke with the Owner/Operator of the three-story building that housed the Thom McCann shoe store, located next door to his apartment and beauty shop at 700 Cookman Ave., about leasing the second floor above the shoe store for a Café.
After squaring away all the legalities that night the band met for rehearsal at he potter’s apartment. Tom gathered everyone together including Margaret and asked them what they thought about his idea for a café where folks could come and listen to music and order coffee, teas, and other various foods. Following a short conversation about the pros and cons the group admitted that would be a great place to have. Then as Distractions Band member Joe Petillo tells us “ Tom, said:’ Well rehearsal is cancelled for tonight! I just signed the lease and we are all gonna go next door and paint, I already have all the paint, brushes and ladders ready!!’” And that was the beginning of THE GREEN MERMAID CAFÉ. As the popularity spread the second floor soon became too small without sufficient dancing room. It bled over to the leasing of and expansion into the third floor and a whole new section was born dedicated to hardcore ROCK AND ROLL and DANCING! That was the birth of THE UPSTAGE CLUB! AND THE REST IS HISTORY!
