Infos: Zitat: The definitive look at The Boss and how his music has both shaped and confronted American mythology Emerging on the music scene with 1973’s “Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.”, Bruce Springsteen was heralded as “the future of rock and roll”, and since then his influence and popularity have exploded. Rob Kirkpatrick’s Magic in the Night uses Springsteen’s biography as a lens through which listeners can reevaluate his music as he morphs from “the next Bob Dylan” to a Reagan-era pop culture icon, and again to today’s populist voice, discussing each album in chronological order. Kirkpatrick’s keen insights show why the classic 1975 album “Born to Run” is the most popular album of all time (according to a recent ZagatSurvey) and what’s made Springsteen the most respected and influential artist in rock music. Though his career has been widely documented, Springsteen fans have never had a book like this one, which lets them immerse themselves in his music and learn about his influences, lyrical choices, and the themes Springsteen has been drawn to again and again in his career. Kirkpatrick’s in-depth analysis of Springsteen’s work–even unreleased songs–and the political controversies surrounding it make Magic in the Night a must for any true Springsteen fan. Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin Sprache: Englische Veröffentlichung: 31. März 2009 288 Seiten Pressestimmen: Zitat: “Rob Kirkpatrick’s rich narrative sheds new light on the songs that have become a soundtrack for the American experience.” - Mark K. Updegrove, former publisher of Newsweek and MTV Magazine “Beautifully written.” - David Barker, editor, Continuum’s “33 1/3” series “The Words and Music of Bruce Springsteen, by Rob Kirkpatrick, offers a fresh, compelling look at The Boss’s art, his life, and even his country.” - Library Media Connection “This is a musical biography of rock singer Bruce Springsteen that travels chronologically through the artist’s many albums examining Springsteen’s creative processes of songwriting, performing, and recording. The author discusses cultural and social contexts for Springsteen’s music, lyrical themes and motifs, musical analysis, and musical and lyrical influences.” - Reference & Research Book News “Other books have covered the life and works of popular musician Bruce Springsteen, but few offer the depth of analysis and critical assessment of The Words and Music of Bruce Springsteen, which opens with a brief biography, before it turns to the heart of the matter: all of his significant albums, in chronological order, which provide a musical analysis of themes, motifs, and underlying ideas. College-level students of popular music will appreciate the attention to detail and the insights which lend to a far greater appreciation for Bruce Springsteen’s works.”–Midwest Book Review - The Bookwatch Das Taschenbuch kann im Bruce Springsteen Fan Shop (Rubrik: Bruce Springsteen Bücher) oder über Amazon.de vorbestellt werden. |

He graduated from Wallkill Senior High School in Wallkill, New York. He received his Bachelor’s from Rutgers University, his Master’s degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and his Doctorate from Binghamton University. After attending the Denver Publishing Institute, he entered the book publishing field and began a career as an acquisitions editor. He has published such authors as Sean Lahman, Linda Cohn, John Hemingway, and Mark Oliver Everett of the Eels (band).[1] In December 2007, Publishers Weekly announced that Kirkpatrick had signed former Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge to write a memoir of his time with the Department of Homeland Security.[2] During his time as an editor, Kirkpatrick began to publish books as an author, as well. In 2009 he published the well-received 1969: The Year Everything Changed as well as new trade paperback editions of two previously published books: a musical biography of Bruce Springsteen and a biography of baseball player Cecil Travis. 1969 was featured in a two-page story by Craig Wilson (columnist) in USA Today.[3] The book received praise from Booklist, which called it "A riveting look at a pivotal year,"[4] and Library Journal, which said, "In this compelling account, Kirkpatrick treats the tumultuous events of 1969 with the skills of a journalist, a historian, a sociologist, and a sportswriter and manages to insert moments of lightness and triviality into his grand tour. He writes as easily about jazz-pop as about the rise of the American Indian Movement..."
